If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m all about simple, science-backed strategies that support your metabolism, gut health, and hormone balance. And today, I want to shine a little light on something that doesn’t get nearly enough credit—resistant starch.
Yes, resistant starch. It’s kind of the quiet overachiever of the carb world—and it’s one of my favorite tools for supporting blood sugar, digestion, and satiety (aka feeling full and satisfied without the crash).
Let’s break it down in real-talk style.
What Is Resistant Starch Anyway?
Resistant starch is a type of carbohydrate that “resists” digestion in the small intestine. That means it makes its way to the large intestine intact—where it becomes food for your good gut bacteria.
In other words? It acts like a fiber. But it’s technically a starch. Cool, right?
Once it lands in the colon, your gut bugs get to work fermenting it. That process creates short-chain fatty acids (like butyrate), which fuel your colon cells, reduce inflammation, and support a thriving microbiome—aka the foundation of pretty much everything in your health.
Why It Matters for Metabolic + Gut Health
Here’s where it gets really good. Resistant starch can help with:
✅ Gut Health
It feeds your beneficial gut bacteria, strengthens your gut lining, and produces anti-inflammatory compounds. Translation: less bloat, better digestion, and improved immune support.
✅ Blood Sugar Balance
Because it doesn’t spike glucose the way regular starches can, it helps keep your blood sugar stable. That’s a win for energy, mood, and hormones—especially if you’re dealing with insulin resistance or trying to prevent blood sugar crashes.
✅ Feeling Full (and Staying That Way)
Resistant starch can actually increase satiety hormones, which means you feel more satisfied and are less likely to reach for snacks an hour later. It may also support fat-burning by enhancing your body’s ability to oxidize fat.
✅ Long-Term Protection
Early research is showing potential links to lower cholesterol, reduced colon cancer risk, and improved nutrient absorption. We’re still learning—but I love where this is heading.
So… Where Do You Find It?
You don’t need fancy supplements to get this in your day. It’s already in a lot of whole foods—some you’re probably already eating.
Here are some of my favorites from the JWW kitchen:
- 🍌 Green bananas – slightly underripe is perfect for smoothies
- 🥔 Cooked and cooled potatoes – yes, cold potato salad counts
- 🍚 Cooked and cooled rice – I love this for meal prep bowls
- 🥬 Lentils, chickpeas, and black beans – powerhouses for gut health
- 🌰 Nuts and seeds – minimally processed and naturally full of fiber
Pro tip: Cook your starches, let them cool, then reheat later. This process increases resistant starch through something called retrogradation—and it doesn’t change the flavor or texture!
The JWW Bottom Line
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about smart shifts that actually move the needle.
Adding more resistant starch to your week is such a simple way to nourish your gut, balance blood sugar, and support that full-body rhythm we’re always working toward inside JWW. Whether it’s a green banana in your smoothie or some chilled rice with your dinner (think FUN5 bowls), these little swaps can make a big difference over time.
Start where you are. Use food as fuel. And trust your body to thrive when you give it the tools it needs.
You’ve got this 💚
